Doubling a multi-site platform while cutting its cost of ownership

The challenge

Our client ran multiple marketing websites, some of them originally built by Trellist in WordPress. Each site had its own theme and its own codebase.

That independence came at a price: a growing pile of tech debt, a high cost of ownership, and features that had to be rebuilt site by site.

What we did

Trellist organized, managed, and executed the migration and hosting of the sites on the WordPress VIP enterprise platform, then kept building.

  • A common theme framework. Shared components replaced one-off codebases, drastically reducing the work of maintaining features and rolling out new ones.
  • Features shared across teams. The marketing solutions team can now share every feature across its many product marketing groups.
  • Room to grow. Trellist built the first 3 sites and scaled the platform to 6, and is now migrating all 6 to a new WordPress platform.
  • Faceted search. We introduced an extensive, faceted search engine so visitors can find what they need.
